Volvo Reveals 2015 XC90 Sketches and Details Ahead of L.A. Auto Show

The Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center's choice as location for a media presentation ahead of this week's L.A. Auto Show may not seem like the most obvious choice. As an active design studio and center for the development of future concepts, you'd think there'd be plenty Volvo wouldn't want an eagle-eyed journo examining just yet. To Volvo's management though, the space was perfect for showing off the company's future. And while we've already reported on the more macro details from the event, it was the focus on the next-generation XC90 that really got our attention.
Introduced in 2002, the XC90 has proven itself a runaway hit for Volvo despite only subtle evolutionary and facelift changes in the decade since its launch. In some ways the XC90 mirrors the iconic Volvo 240 wagon - both highly versatile vehicles that soldiered on for years with continued owner loyalty, buying one after another because of its high degree of versatility and subtly handsome appearance. In truth, the XC90's success is part of the reason it had not yet been replaced and as the Ford Motor Company shopped for buyers for its Swedish subsidiary, lack of funds in order to show a profit on the books meant the solid-selling XC90 would have to soldier on. And it did.
As with the 240 though, the cycle must begin again and Volvo Cars have just such a plan for the XC90. An entirely new modular architecture will allow the XC90 to achieve new levels of efficiency while allowing Volvo to retain its place as the world’s safety leader. The XC90's new architecture goes by the acronym SPA, for Scalable Platform Architecture - the very same component set upon which all future Volvos will come to reside. SPA-based cars will use a combination of steel and aluminum to achieve high strength and reduced weight goals and the first new Volvo to take advantage of SPA will be the XC90 when it arrives in 2015.
Design drawings shown at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center presentation reveal a radical stylistic departure from the current XC90. Some shots do show familiar cues like the sloping C-pillar, though others adopt the latest brand cues as seen with the YOU concept that was also on display.

Zoals ik al in m'n column in VolvoDrive #4 schreef, het lijkt me fantastisch om de ontwikkeling van een nieuw model van nabij mee te maken.
Is het ook niet zo dat Volvo "per ongeluk (expres)" schetsen en photoshops lekken om daarmee wereldwijd reacties uit te lokken? Om vervolgens met die reacties aan de slag te gaan en het ontwerp aan te passen, te fine-tunen, kortom om zo dicht mogelijk bij de vraag uit de markt te komen????
De Volvo XC90 van de 2de generatie zou mogelijk zijn wereldpremière krijgen in 2014 of 2015. . Als het in 2014 wordt, zou men kunnen denken dat het zijn wereldpremière krijgt op de Frankfurt Show in de herfst van dat jaar. Anders krijgt hij zijn wereldpremière op het autosalon van Detroit in januari 2015. Gezien het feit dat de Amerikaanse markt de belangrijkste is voor de XC90.
DE XC90 zou het nieuwe SPA-platform gebruiken waar de afkorting staat voor Scalable Platform Architecture. Met andere woorden, een platform dat schaalbaar is om te dienen als de basis voor alle toekomstige Volvo-modellen, ongeacht de grootte.
Nog twee schetsen voor een mogelijke achterzijde..
Bij Volvo wordt gewerkt aan de opvolger voor de XC90. De ontwerpafdeling in de VS heeft vier schetsen klaar met ideeën voor de nieuwe SUV.
.De Volvo XC90 loopt al mee sinds 2002. Hoog tijd dus dat er wordt gewerkt aan een opvolger voor die grote SUV. De ontwerpstudio in Californië laat vier ontwerpideeën zien voor het nieuwe model. Bij de achterzijdes valt te zien hoe er wordt gespeeld met verschillende hoeken voor de ruiten en vormen van de achterlichten. De tekening van de voorzijde draagt kenmerken van de Universe concept car.
Volvo meldt verder dat de nieuwe XC90 de eerste auto is die wordt gebouwd op de nieuwe Scalable Platform Arcitecture (SPA). Het ziet er naar uit de auto verder alleen wordt voorzien van viercilindermotoren die natuurlijk zijn voorzien van directe brandstofinjectie en turbotechniek.
Het nieuwe platform van Volvo kan alle vormen van hybride, plug in-hybride en elektrische versies aan, dus het ligt voor de hand dat zo’n versie er vroeg of laat ook wel zal komen. Ondanks de hoge leeftijd van het huidige model, doet –ie het in de verkooplijsten nog uitstekend. Volvo maakt dan ook geen bloedspoed met de ontwikkeling van het nieuwe model. De nieuwe XC90 wordt pas in de loop van 2014 verwacht.

Denk niet dat dat zo makkelijk is. Want als je de keuze bij de koper laat, moet je dus verschillende opties aanbieden. En die moet je dus ontwikkelen. De kosten daarvoor zijn wat hoog en die kun je nooit doorbelasten aan de paar klanten die zich niet laten beinvloeden door de belastingen ed. Dus ga je voor de grote gemene deler

Als het kind in je verdwenen is, ben je pas echt oud!
Toch jammer, want bij mercedes en bmw en audi, kun je van 1.2 tot 6.3 liter krijgen bij wijze van..
Nu kun je dat niet helemaal vergelijken want volvo moet veelal alleen de ontwikkeling bekostigen, maar toch jammer. Want het geluid van de motor is ook een stuk emotie! En volvo heeft bij mij altijd op 1 gestaan als het gaat om emotie, maar is toch wel een minpuntje als het aan mij ligt.
