Fire risk spurs a Volvo recall
By Bloomberg News | July 28, 2007
Ford Motor Co.'s Volvo is recalling its 2005 XC90 sport-utility vehicles, the division's best-selling model, to inspect the battery to ensure it doesn't short-circuit and cause a fire.
The recall covers more than 42,000 of the XC90 SUVs made from June 7, 2004, to May 13, 2005, at a plant in Torslanda, Sweden, Volvo told the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The handle of the vehicle's jack, which is stored near the battery, can be misplaced during maintenance under a bracket holding the battery in place, possibly leading to a short-circuit.
Volvo said it will ensure that the handle is properly stowed and add a warning label at no charge for owners.
Volvo sold 36,025 XC90s during 2005, or about 29 percent of the division's total sales that year, according to Autodata Corp. in Woodcliff Lake, N.J.
A spokesman for Volvo declined to say what the recall would cost Ford.
He said the automaker is sending letters to owners in the United States and Canada.
