I ordered my car with the stock 17 " sadia rims. Then I have found some mint condition sleipner 18's for sale that I plan to use for summer tires. While searching for winter tyres, I can get Nokian nordic winter tires (Hakkapelliitta R2) which is the OEM tyre delivered for winter use here in the nordic countries. The dealer gave me two options:

235/45 R 17 97 R for around 940 (!) EUR - or -
225/50 R 17 98 R for around 550 EUR

So now I'm struggling to motivate the extra 400 EUR to follow the exact Volvo specification... It seems like the 225's would be a better fit for a 8 " rim, it has a higher load index than the 235's. The only difference is 10 mm tyre width.
Can this really be motivated? In Sweden where we actually have snow and ice in the winter, wider rims doesn't mean better grip. Actually, the opposite is true - a narrower tyre provides a better grip.

Now, I wouldn't mount a tyre with lesser load or speed index than recommended, but what about the 225/50's? It also closer in circumferrence than the 235/45's compared to the 235/45 R 18's. Only 1,7 % difference. The 235/45's are 3,9 %... This would mean better speedometer accuracy.

What do you guys say?
