Volvo auction moves ahead; decision possible soon

NEW YORK, May 6 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co's <F.N> sale of Volvo is moving ahead as it runs due diligence on the remaining bidders, and a buyer could be announced by the end of this month or next, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Less than five bidders remain in the auction for the Swedish brand, and China's Geely Automobile Holdings <0175.HK> is one of them, the sources said. Both people declined to be identified because the details of the auction are confidential.

Geely is also in the first round of bidders for General Motors Corp's <GM.N> Saab brand, according to another source familiar with the Saab auction.

One of the two sources familiar with the Volvo auction said the bidders were being given management presentations and tours of the Volvo facilities in Sweden.

Ford, the only U.S. automaker that did not seek emergency loans from the U.S. government, put Volvo up for sale in December as it looked to cut costs and raise cash amid industry-wide record-low vehicle sales.

Ford has already sold Aston Martin, Jaguar and Land Rover, disbanding the Premier Automotive Group, whose only remaining brand is Volvo.

The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker lost $14.7 billion in 2008 and has reported losses of about $30 billion in the past three years. It also burned through $21 billion of cash last year.

Ford bought Volvo for $6.45 billion in 1999 and wrote down the value of Volvo by $2.4 billion following a review of the brand's prospects in January 2008.

But with auto sales at record lows -- Volvo's U.S. sales fell nearly 37 percent in April -- any likely buyer is expected to buy the brand at a heavy discount.

Volvo posted a loss of $736 million on a pre-tax basis in the fourth quarter of 2008, and lost $255 million in the first quarter of this year.

Ford only began disclosing Volvo's results last year, in an effort to make it a more independent unit. (Editing by Ian Geoghegan)

EIB negotiations on hold between Volvo Cars and the Government


Following extensive discussions, Volvo Car Corporation and the Swedish Government have agreed to put on hold their negotiations for a state guarantee of loans to Volvo Cars from the European Investment Bank. Volvo Cars and the Government have reached this position jointly, principally in consideration of Ford's Strategic Review which could lead to a sale of Volvo Cars.


In December 2008, the European Union approved 16 billion Euros for four years to the European Investment Bank (EIB) to lend to the European automotive industry in support for green technologies. Later in the same month the Swedish Government reserved 20 billon SEK for guaranteeing these loans. In March 2009 the EIB approved loans of 200 MEURO for Volvo Cars for 2009, subject to availability of a state guarantee.


"We have had a constructive dialogue with the Swedish Government and they have been very supportive of Volvo Cars' business case all along", says Stephen Odell, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.


The loans were planned to provide financing to support projects related to environmental technologies which are currently ongoing at Volvo Cars.


"We are disappointed that we have not been able to come to an agreement. Our competitors in other markets like Italy, Germany, France and UK have been able to utilize similar EIB loans which clearly give them competitive advantage during these difficult times", adds Odell.


Volvo Cars will now focus on realizing other governmental inititatives to support its business through for example, market stimulation packages, R&D funding, support to distressed suppliers and competence development. Very little of this has been put in place so far.


In parallel to the negotiations with the Swedish Government, Volvo Car Corporation has opened up a dialogue in other areas where the company operates. These discussions will continue.

Ford hoopt Volvo zo snel mogelijk van de hand te kunnen doen, nu verschillende partijen de boeken van de Zweedse dochter inkijken. Onder de drie gegadigden is Geely uit China. Eerder was Tata Motors in de race, maar dat bedrijf heeft zich na het inzien van financiën teruggetrokken.

Volvo Chief Executive Officer Stephen Odell heeft aan de medewerkers van het automerk laten weten dat er binnen enkele weken gesprekken worden gevoerd met serieus geïnteresseerde partijen in Volvo. Dat blijkt uit een memo waar persbureau Bloomberg News de hand op heeft weten te leggen. In het document staat: “Leden van het Volvo Cars-managementteam zullen deelnemen aan presentaties voor overnamekandidaten die Volvo bezoeken. Voor ons bij Volvo zal er voorlopig niets veranderen."

Ford wil om en nabij de twee miljard dollar vangen voor Volvo, wat eenderde is van wat de Amerikanen een jaar of tien geleden zelf voor het Zweedse markt hebben afgerekend. Dat er afscheid wordt genomen van Volvo staat vast. Ford laat echter niets los over de status van het proces. Naar verluidt heeft Geely al in maart een officeel bod op Volvo uitgebracht.

Als enige van de drie Amerikaanse autoconcerns heeft Ford niet bij de overheid aangeklopt voor financiële steun. Het bedrijf deed in de afgelopen twee jaar Aston Martin, Land Rover en Jaguar van de hand.

Geely Automobile rules out acquisition of Saab, Volvo

Chinese automotive group Geely Automobile Holdings (HKG:0175) is not planning to buy Swedish carmakers Volvo, owned by US Ford Motor (NYSE:F), or Saab, part of General Motors (NYSE:GM), China Knowledge reports 11 May 2009.
The company said in a statement it has no intention to bid for either Volvo or Saab as recently speculated by the media.

Other Chinese carmakers, among which Chery Automobile Co Ltd, Dongfeng Motor Corp (HKG:0489), FAW Group Corp and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp, were also reported to be interested in buying those car brands.

Volvo Cars turns to Belgium for loan help

Following a breakdown in talks between Volvo Cars and the Swedish government over loan guarantees, the automaker now plans to ask authorities in Belgium for help securing a loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The Swedish carmaker, owned by US giant Ford, had been in discussions with Stockholm to act as guarantor for €200 million ($266 million) loan from the EIB.

But Volvo Cars also has a factory in Ghent in Belgium's Flanders region and on Thursday CEO Stephen Odell said in an interview that the company will now ask the Flemish government to back their application.

He also hinted that the result of those talks could influence where new models are built.

"It is clear that a loan guarantee from Belgium could affect our future decisions on the location of production and product development," he told the Swedish business daily Dagens Industri.

"I cannot allow Volvo Cars to be at a disadvantage against competitors who have the backing of their governments…I must do something," Odell said.

"The opportunities in Belgium are greater in the short term. They also have a more flexible system that increases capacity to retain more employees," he added.

However, the chief executive stressed the company had no plans to close its factory in Torslanda, just outside Gothenburg in southwestern Sweden

"Volvo's DNA is found in Sweden," Odell was quoted as saying.

On March 12, the European Investment Bank granted €3.0 billion in loans to a number of European carmakers, €200 million of which was earmarked for Volvo Cars.

But the securing of those loans was dependent on the Swedish government agreeing to act as a guarantor, leading the company to intensify discussions with the Flemish authorities.

Volvo Cars spokeswoman Maria Bohlin told AFP initial talks had been held with officials in Flanders earlier this year.

Volvo Cars has been a separate company from the Volvo Group, the truckmaker, since it was acquired by Ford in 1999 for $6.45 billion.

"Gent is erg belangrijk voor Volvo Cars" (topman)

De fabriek van Volvo Cars in Gent is een erg belangrijke en succesvolle vestiging voor Volvo Cars. Dat heeft Volvo-topman Stephen Odell gezegd na een gesprek maandagochtend met Vlaams minister-president Kris Peeters en de Vlaamse ministers Patricia Ceysens en Frank Vandenbroucke. Concrete resultaten werden maandagochtend niet bereikt, maar de gesprekken verliepen volgens Peeters "erg constructief" en zullen in de zeer nabije toekomst voortgezet worden.

"Dit was een vervolgvergadering en we zullen de details in de toekomst bespreken", aldus Peeters. Volgens de Vlaamse minister-president wordt een werkgroep geïnstalleerd "om de zaken zo snel mogelijk in detail te bekijken". De werkgroep moet duidelijk maken onder welke voorwaarden Vlaanderen garanties zal kunnen geven. Volvo-topman Odell benadrukte ervan overtuigd te zijn dat Volvo Cars een fantastische toekomst te wachten staat. Volvo Cars kreeg van de Europese Investeringsbank (EIB) een lening van om en bij de 200 miljoen euro zo goed als toegezegd. Daarvoor wil de autobouwer financiële garanties bekomen van de Vlaamse regering. Die garanties zullen volgens de Vlaamse regering afhangen van onder meer het businessmodel dat Volvo Cars zal voorleggen. (DWM)

Niet geheel onverwachts lijkt mij. De belgische regering is in het kader van de werkgelegenheid in de auto industrie eerder al gesprekken aangegaan met General Motors. En ik denk dat ze ook met Volkswagen praten over de huidige situatie. Al met al zijn er veel mensen werkzaam in de auto industrie in Belgie en men wil graag bepaalde zekerheden hebben.

en word het nou nog eens een keer duidelijk wat er met volvo gaat gebeuren!!??? of kijkt ford het toch nog even aan??

EU approves Volvo loan guarantees

The European Commission has approved the Swedish government’s request for loan guarantees for Volvo cars.

The approval paves the way for Volvo to borrow €500 million ($708 million) from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to help fund the €1.9 billion project to develop more environmentally friendly cars.

Europe's top competition watchdog said that the state aid was in line with EU
guidelines for providing access to financing in the face of the economic
crisis.

"The state guarantees would contribute to Volvo's investment project for environmental-friendly cars without giving rise to any undue distortions of competition”, Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a statement.

The loans, which will be guaranteed by the Swedish government, will be provided in five installments through the end of 2010 and have a maturity of seven years.

On March 12, the European Investment Bank granted 3.0 billion euros in loans to a number of European carmakers, including to Volvo Cars.

But the securing of those loans was dependent on the Swedish government agreeing to act as a guarantor.

Although Volvo Cars spokeswoman Maria Bohlin welcomed the EU approval as "positive" she said that the company "will not have the money today" because talks with government on the guarantees have been on ice since early May.

The negotiations are suspended "as long as the question of the car maker's owner has not been resolved", she said in reference to Ford's plans to sell its Swedish brand.

Since the break down, Volvo has also been in talks about loan guarantees with the Flemish regional government in the Netherlands.

BRUSSEL - De Europese Commissie heeft donderdag de staatssteun van Zweden aan autofabrikant Volvo Personvagnar (Volvo PV) goedgekeurd. Het gaat om een lening van 500 miljoen euro van de Europese Investeringsbank (EIB).

Eurocommissaris Neelie Kroes (Mededinging) verklaarde dat de steun bijdraagt aan Volvo's investering voor milieuvriendelijke auto's en daarbij geen oneerlijke concurrentie bewerkstelligt.

De Europese Commissie concludeerde dat de lening niet in strijd is met de Europese regels, die staatsteun toestaan om een duidelijke verstoring in de economie te herstellen.

Volvo is van plan de lening van de EIB te gebruiken voor het ontwikkelen van energiezuinige wagens en de vermindering van CO2-uitstoot.


Vijf termijnen

De kosten voor dit totale project bedragen 1,9 miljard euro. De lening zal in 2009 en 2010 over vijf termijnen worden verstrekt en heeft een looptijd van zeven jaar.

Belachelijk, staatssteun (ons belastinggeld dus!) aan commerciële bedrijven!! Als je geen winst maakt, opzouten, opdoeken dat bedrijf. Anderen zullen in dat gat duiken, de sterksten zullen overleven. Dat is nu gezonde economie! Hoe zinloos staatssteun wel is blijkt uit de miljarden die enige decennia geleden in Neerlands trots, de scheepsbouw werd gepompt door de overheid. Onze belastingcenten zijn weggegooid, verdampt want ondanks al die steun: weg Verolme, weg RSV, weg Wilton Feyenoord, noem maar op. Een bloody shame dat dezelfde fout weer wordt gemaakt met de automobielindustrie :redhotevil:

Het gaat om het principe, of het nu van de Zweedse of whatever welke overheid dan ook komt, het is bullshit die steun!!

beetje kort door de bocht. Als een autoproducent omvalt vallen ook de toeleveranciers om en dat kan dus in de duizenden banen lopen. Doe me dan maar wat staatssteun voor het bedrijf zodat de ecenomie blijft draaien.

Lekker kortzichtig opgemerkt volvo. Principes zijn leuk, werk en brood op de plank leuker.

Lees vooral mijn eerste reactie. Staatssteun is een doodlopende weg. Ook die scheepsbouwers waren blij met die steun. "Werk en brood op de plank". Een doodlopende weg, uiteindelijk stonden ze toch op straat. Wat jij wil is de ultieme stap: volledige staatsteun, geleide economie, communisme...

Het voordeel van communisme is wel dat er niet zoveel concurrenten zijn: stel de overheid gaat voor Volvo.....
Net als in de DDR vroeger waar iedreen een Trabant had, wat een droom!

Hoho, wie heeft het over volledige staatssteun en communisme. Het is dat je me verder niet kent anders had je dat woord nooit in je mond genomen. Waar het mij om gaat is dat, staatssteun niet per definitie fout is. Als daarmee een autoproducent geholpen kan worden en daarmee de toeleveranciers en heel wat banen ben ik voor. Maar je moet niet zomaar steun geven. De producent moet een gedegen plan op tafel leggen om aan te tonen dat ze in de toekomst beter kunnen. Maar ik heb liever dat de staat steun geeft aan dit soort dingen dan dat ze het verbrassen met snoepreisjes naar Aruba bijvoorbeeld. Of een loos project als de HSL etc.
