Ik wacht nog even om m'n mening te vormen tot ik de nieuweling IRL heb gezien. Veel nieuwe Volvo's krijgen negatieve commentaar vooraleer iemand ze in het echt heeft gezien, en als ze er dan echt zijn valt het allemaal reuze mee, toch ?

Inderdaad, toen de XC70NN uitkwam enkele jaren geleden vond ik em helemaal niks, lelijk gewoon en nu ben ik helemaal in mijn nopjes dat ik er een heb !

Volvo XC90 test in Amsterdam door Guus Hoevenaars
Voor eind dit jaar staat de nieuwe Volvo XC90 op de agenda, maar voor die tijd is het Zweedse merk nog druk aan het testen met de SUV. Ook in Amsterdam is een zwaar gecamoufleerd testmodel gespot door enkele oplettende voorbijgangers.


De XC90 in kwestie is niet alleen gecamoufleerd, maar staat ook nog eens onder een doek. Toch is het silhouet van de SUV duidelijk te zien en omdat één van de testers in de achterbak moet zijn, zien we ook al de achterlichten van de Zweed.

De nieuwe XC90 staat als eerste Volvo op het nieuwe Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) waarop in de toekomst meerdere modellen komen te staan. Van de nieuwe SUV komt ook een uitvoering met een benzine plug-in hybride aandrijving. Deze zal bij de onthulling worden geleverd of niet veel later volgen. Deze hybride komt in ieder geval ook naar Nederland.

The new Volvo XC90 SUV will debut later this year but the current Volvo XC90 however won’t die. Production will be moved to China where it will roll off the line from December. The XC90 will be manufactured in a new Geely-funded factory in Daqing in Heilongjiang Province.

The Volvo XC90 will be offered as a budget alternative next to the new Volvo XC90 which will be imported into China from early 2015. Geely will also use the XC90 platform for an SUV of its own, which is expected to launch in late 2015. The China-made XC90 will only be available with the 2.5 liter petrol engine.

Volvo is al met een heus teaser-offensief begonnen voor de nieuwe XC90, maar het testwerk moet natuurlijk ook gewoon doorgaan. In de Sierra Nevada trof onze spionagefotograaf een prototype met minder camouflage aan.
We zitten helaas nog steeds tegen psychedelische camouflage aan te kijken, maar we zien in elk geval méér dan bij eerdere prototypen. Die hadden namelijk zwarte camouflage die de vormen van de carrosserie verbloemde.

Het front laat zien dat we de koplampen van de Concept Coupé, Concept XC Coupé en Concept Estate daadwerkelijk gaan zien op de eerste productieauto van de nieuwe generatie Volvo's, de XC90.

De nieuwe SUV profiteert van het nieuwe SPA-platform van Volvo. Het Zweedse merk gaat deze structuur voor al z'n toekomstige modellen van de 60- en de 90-reeksen gebruiken.

Onder de kap komen alleen viercilinders te liggen. Denk om die reden niet dat de XC90 een trage auto wordt, want de topversie krijgt dankzij hybride-techniek een vermogen van 400 pk en 600 Nm koppel.

Volvo onthult de nieuwe XC90 aan het einde van het jaar, waarschijnlijk op de autosalon van Parijs. Rond de jaarwisseling komt de auto bij de dealers te staan.

GOTHENBURG, Sweden - July 22nd 2014- Volvo Cars’ all-new XC90 – which will be revealed in August – will offer the most comprehensive and technologically sophisticated standard safety package available in the automotive industry. The new technologies will take the company a significant step closer to its vision that no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by 2020.

The standard safety package on the all-wheel drive, seven seat premium SUV will include two world first safety technologies: a run-off road protection package and auto brake at intersection capability.

“Our starting point on safety is the same today as it was 87 years ago: real-life situations,” says Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Group. “We study data. We crunch numbers. We innovate. The result is one of the safest cars ever made.”

World first number 1: Run-off road protection

Run-off road is a common accident type with different causes, such as driver distraction, fatigue or poor weather conditions. For example, half of all traffic fatalities in the United States are road departure accidents, while in Sweden, single-vehicle accidents involve one third of all fatal- and severe injury crashes with passenger cars.

In a run-off road scenario, the all-new Volvo XC90 detects what is happening and the front safety belts are tightened to keep the occupants in position. The belts are firmly tightened as long as the car is in motion.

To help prevent spine injuries, energy-absorbing functionality between the seat and seat frame cushions the vertical forces that can arise when the car encounters a hard landing in the terrain. The solution is capable of reducing the vertical occupant forces by up to one third.

World first number 2: Auto brake at intersections

The XC90 is the first car in the world with technology that features automatic braking if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car. This is a common scenario at busy city crossings as well as on highways, where the speed limits are higher. The all-new Volvo XC90 detects a potential crash and brakes automatically in order to avoid a collision or mitigate the consequences of a crash.

All auto brake functions standard

City Safety will become the umbrella name for all of Volvo Cars’ auto brake functions – which are standard equipment in the all-new XC90.

“City Safety is one of the most advanced standard crash prevention offers you can find in a modern car. It now covers vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians in front of the car, day and night,” explains Lotta Jakobsson, Senior Technical Specialist Safety at Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “We are now able to cover the whole span from dusk to dawn by a high-sensitive camera combined with advanced exposure control.”
