Volvo will launch XC90 successor next year
NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Volvo will introduce a successor to the XC90 in late 2014, CEO Hakan Samuelsson said.
The model will be the first all-new vehicle launched by Volvo as a unit of China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.
A large luxury platform for the next-generation XC90 is being engineered in Sweden and will also underpin the successor to Volvo's flagship S80 sedan, Samuelsson said today on the sidelines of the New York auto show.
The platform is known inside Volvo as SPA, for Scalable Product Architecture. It can accommodate a variety of powertrains, including Volvo's first production plug-in hybrid system.
At the Geneva show earlier this month, Samuelsson was not happy that the automaker has waited more than a decade to introduce a second-generation XC90, especially since the premium large SUV was once the brand's best seller.
"What we have learned about the XC90 is that you have to be very careful when delaying product development, you are borrowing money from the future and you have to pay it back with interest," he said in Geneva. "It was not very smart to delay that program."
Global sales of the XC90 fell 21 percent to 31,290 last year compared with 2011, according to Volvo.
Compacts, subcompacts
Volvo is also jointly developing with Geely a new compact platform for smaller models, some of which will be built at a new Volvo plant in Chengdu, China, Samuelsson said.
Volvo also is considering an expansion of its product range to include subcompact models, as premium European competitors such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz have done, he said.
