Volvo teases ‘time machine’ concept for 2015 LA Auto Show

By Stephen Edelstein — October 21, 2015

The sole image released by Volvo to announce their "time machine" concept.

Today may be Back to the Future Day, but Volvo is waiting until the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show next month to unveil its “time machine.”

At least, that’s how Volvo is coyly describing the concept car it plans to unveil in L.A. on November 18. While details are scarce, the concept apparently won’t feature gullwing doors, a flux capacitor, or the ability to transport its driver to situations that could lead to time paradoxes.

“You won’t be able to go back in time,” said Anders Tylman-Mikiewicz, head of the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center,” but when our planned concept is applied to an SPA-based vehicle, it has the potential of giving significant time back to drivers.” So this concept will really be more of a “time-saving machine” than a “time machine.”

It may also preview an upcoming Volvo production model. SPA is the shorthand for Scalable Product Architecture, the modular platform that debuted with the 2016 XC90, and that will underpin most Volvo models sold in the U.S. going forward. The next production model based on the platform will likely be the S90 full-size sedan.

In just a few years, every model will be based on either SPA or the newly-introduced Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) for compact cars. Between the two platforms, Volvo plans to launch 14 new models over the next three years, replacing everything in its current lineup besides the just-launched, SPA-based XC90.

That’s not all the company apparently has in store. It plans to launch an electric car by 2019, and to increase the number of plug-in hybrids in its lineup in the meantime. An S90 plug-in hybrid will likely join the XC90 T8 model that will go on sale in the U.S. soon. That includes sporty Polestar models tuned by the company, which Volvo purchased earlier this year.

14 nieuwe modellen komende 3 jaar. Dat is nogal flink!
Of zijn de 'normale' V40, V40 Cross Country, V40 polestar, V40 PIH allemaal afzonderlijke modellen? Want dan valt het weer tegen...

Volvo could be looking at adding a pair of sporty coupes to its lineup.

The Swedish automaker recently filed for two trademarks in the U.S., one for C40 and another for C60 nameplates. Both trademark applications are for “land motor vehicles, automobiles and their engines; exterior insignia badges for vehicles; vehicle rooftop carriers, namely, automobile roof racks; spare tire covers; fitted motor vehicle covers; running boards for motor vehicles; mud flaps for motor vehicles; hitch plugs for motor vehicles, namely, trailer hitches; sunshades and license plate frames for motor vehicles; windshields for motor vehicles; windows for motor vehicles; wheels for motor vehicles; hub caps for motor vehicle wheels.”

This isn’t the first time that Volvo has trademarked the C40 and C60 nameplates in the U.S. The Swedish automaker previously filed for the trademarks in 2001 before it was abandoned in 2009 when Volvo submitted its second filing. Both trademarks are currently still registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Like other trademarks filed by automakers, this doesn’t guarantee that Volvo is working on C40 and C60 models, but could be to protect the nameplate from use. The company has hinted at developing a coupe model with its Concept XC Coupe.

LOS ANGELES -- Volvo isn't using the 2015 LA Auto Show to show off its next big passenger car. Instead, the brand is aiming just a bit further down the road -- autonomous cars.

The automaker's using its time in California to debut the Concept 26, an interior-design study that gives us a hint at the sort of versatility we can expect from a car that can be both driven and not driven, depending on the driver's mood.

Concept 26 utilizes the Scalable Product Architecture platform that underpins the brand's all-new XC90 crossover, as well as several forthcoming Volvo cars, including an all-new flagship that should be appearing in the near future. Thus, it's not inconceivable to imagine that the meat and potatoes of this concept could appear on the market relatively soon, once autonomous technology allows for a truly driver-free experience.

Knap qua visie op het rijden in de nabije toekomst. Zelf rijden wanneer het (men er) nog kan (van genieten) en het saaie werk overlaten aan de wagen zodat men zich op interessantere zaken kan concentreren.
