“Sustainability and authenticity are core values at HEICO SPORTIV. Consequently, it is only logical and natural that we apply these principles to motor sports as well,” explains HEICO SPORTIV general manager, Holger Hedtke.
Since 2007, HEICO SPORTIV has been living out the maxim of “Green Racing” with bioethanol E85, proving that motor sports and ecological awareness are reconcilable.
And with considerable success, too: the Weiterstadt-based Volvo tuner has meanwhile been able to chalk up four class victories with Volvo C30 and C40 models.
Technology partnership with Südzucker subsidiary CropEnergies
A key factor in the successful implementation is the E85 fuel marketed under the name CropPower85. Over the course of the winter, the entire 2009 racing season’s data was analyzed together with CropEnergies experts. The results were then used to fine-tune the engine software with the goal of further improving the efficiency and, consequently, range of the Volvo C30: such adjustments can be crucial for the outcome of long distance races of up to 24 hours.
In the first test drives around the Nürburgring’s Northern Loop, we registered fuel consumption values around 10% lower than last year and as much as 25% lower than in 2007. “Thanks to CropEnergies’ know-how, it’s now possible to exhaust the full potential of the turbo engine in combination with CropPower85,” says engine technician and driver, Martin Müller.
Holistic approach through environmentally optimized Pirelli racing tires
But Green Racing is not limited alone to the fuel that is used. Besides E85, a range of other innovative technologies – such as various bodywork accessories comprising biologically decomposable natural fibers and new Pirelli racing tires – is waiting on the sidelines. “The cooperation with HEICO SPORTIV is extremely important for Pirelli. We use the partnership for further developing environmentally optimized racing tires, thereby positioning us to transfer our Green Performance Strategy to motor sports,” says Michael Blaufuss, Director Motor Sports at Pirelli.
Clear goals
HEICO SPORTIV racked up two class victories at three races in 2009, a track record it wishes to resume in the coming racing season. The main focus is on the 38th ADAC 24-Hour Race at the Nürburgring where the well-rehearsed driver-trio, Patrick Brenndörfer, Frank Eickholt and Martin Müller, will be at the wheel. “We’ve improved all the key areas – such as the engine, chassis, aerodynamics and weight – of the Volvo C30, which has received a facelift this year, and expect even faster lap times as a result,” explains HEICO SPORTIV press spokesman, Patrick Brenndörfer.
