The highly-anticipated debut of the Volvo S60R GT in the 2004 SPEED World Challenge GT Series at the Road America meeting with veteran race ace Derek Bell behind the wheel.
The challenge of getting four factory-built Volvo S60R road cars into race trim for the 2004 SPEED World Challenge GT Series has taken longer than expected, but, at Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, USA, the Cosworth powered race machine made its long-awaited debut.
With five-time Le Mans 24-hour winner Derek Bell in the cockpit of car 24, the debut was restricted to just a few race laps when the car was called in after the failure of a US$6 suspension bolt, but the practice days proved a huge fund of information for Bell and his As Speed Motorsports team.
?I was thrilled to be her and we?ve learned so much in these three days. There is nothing like a race situation to find out where you are and the car?s running really well,? said Derek Bell, adding, ?We learned more in three days that in thousands of hours of testing.?
A second Volvo S60R GT race car, to be driven by young sensation Jameson Riley will join Bell on the grid at the next round of the 2004 SPEED World Challenge GT Series at Road Atlanta with the aim of racing all four cars next year.
The Volvo S60R debut represents Volvo?s motorsports debut in the USA and the campaign will be geared towards the championship series in 2005.
