Volvo Re-Upping S60 / V60 Polestars in 2015, More Polestar Radness Coming

Volvo is, by and large, a purveyor of responsible, sober, and ever-so-safe automobiles. But every now and then, Volvo kicks out a product that’s more Swedish House Mafia than polska. And the raucous and rare 2015 S60 and V60 Polestars are the most recent vehicular manifestations of such Swedish irreverence. The speed with which all 750 of the world’s allotment—of which 40 sedans and 80 wagons came to the U.S.—sold out surprised even Volvo. Happily, another batch of the high-zoot, high-priced, 350-hp image models are on the way.
“It was my mistake. I limited it to just 750 cars.” admits Lex Kerssemakers, senior VP of product planning and vehicle line management. “I just didn’t want those cars sitting around in case it doesn’t work, because then, rather than a brand driver it becomes a burden to the dealer. But the cars sold out significantly faster [than we expected]. That’s why we decided to do another batch.”

Volvo will tell us exactly how large the new batch will be at a later date, but the cars themselves won’t change much if at all. And they’ll all be built this year. That’s good news, because the S60 Polestar we recently tested was a hoot.
Even better news is that more Polestar-tweaked Volvos models are being planned beyond this batch of S60s and V60s. “Polestar is based in Sweden, they take care of our racing program, we have the same philosophy, so I see in the future an increased cooperation with Polestar. For our part, we’d love to see what Polestar can do with Volvo’s experimental “triple-boost” Drive-E engine, which already is said to produce 450 horsepower.
“We have been waiting to offer the [next Polestar models] because we first want to take care of our base program—we have environmentally friendly engines, we have the Drive-E four-cylinder turbo launched, so we have covered that part of the market. But there is obviously room for a higher-horsepower car in the higher-up segments. We will have [more Polestars] in the future. This will be part of our portfolio.”
