The last XC90 leaves the Torslanda factory

The last Volvo XC90 to be produced in Gothenburg rolled off the Torslanda plant line by noon today, Friday July 11, marking car number 636,143. From there it was taken to the Volvo Museum.

Representatives from the media, the Executive Management Team and the project team behind the development of the XC90 were on site to celebrate the last current version of the XC90, now leaving room for the next generation of cars. Right before lunch the Twilight Bronze painted car left the production line.

Project Director Hans Wikman shared the thoughts of the development team in the late 1990s.

- We didn't want to make a copy of the existing SUVs on the market but wanted to put a new standard in the segment, especially from a security point of view.

Deputy Plant Manager Michael Gustafsson says that when production stops at 0:12 AM Saturday and the plant closes for the holiday, extensive preparations begins for the start of production of the all-new Volvo XC90 in the assembly plant.

- Since the new model is slightly larger, adjustments will be made at virtually every station.

Production of the current XC90 continues under the name Volvo XC Classic and will be built in Volvo's new plant in Daqing with start of production later this year. It is intended for the Chinese market only.


Among the guests in the Torslanda plant earier today were both Hans-Olov Olsson vice Chairman of the Board of directors, and Paul Welander, SVP Quality and Customer Satisfaction.

XC90 Facts

– The decision to make a proposal for a modern, not oversized, 7 seater SUV was made in August 1998.

• RSC (Roll Stability Control), a system using a gyro sensor to detect and prevent the risk of the car rolling over and ROPS (Roll Over Protection System) to optimise protective safety for all passengers in case the car would still roll over.

• Inflatable side curtains for all three rows of seats.
