Volvo Cars starts XC60 production in China

Volvo Cars has started production of its bestselling XC60 crossover at its plant in Chengdu, expanding its production in China on the back of strong sales growth.

The Volvo XC60 is the second model to be produced in Chengdu after the plant started production of the Volvo S60L long wheel base sedan in November 2013.

Adding the XC60 to the Chengdu production line also means that the plant will add 500 new manufacturing jobs, bringing the total headcount in the plant to around 2,650 employees. A new working time system will secure the required increase in output.

The XC60 is the best-selling Volvo model globally and in China.

Globally, XC60 sales have increased 20.4 per cent to 98,309 cars in the first nine months of 2014, while sales in China are up 32.3 per cent to 24,940 cars over the same period. Earlier this year, the XC60 passed the 500,000 cars sold mark since it was launched in 2008.

“The start of XC60 production in Chengdu is the latest milestone in Volvo Cars’ transformation,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. “It will be instrumental in boosting Volvo’s overall growth in what is now our largest market.”

The Chengdu plant is located in the Chengdu Economic and Technological Development Zone in central China. Annual production capacity of the plant is 120,000 cars.

Volvo Cars also has a plant in Daqing, northeast China, where assembly has started of the Volvo XC Classic, a locally-built variant of the first-generation Volvo XC90 for the Chinese market.

Furthermore, Volvo Cars operates an engine plant in Zhangjiakou, northwest of Beijing, which has been operational since the autumn of 2013 and supplies engines to Chengdu and Daqing.

All of the company’s operations in China have been developed according to the Volvo Cars’ global standards and processes used in the Torslanda and Ghent plants in Europe.

“The Chengdu plant is absolutely on a par with our European plants,” said Lars Danielson, Senior Vice President Volvo Cars China Operations and CEO of Volvo Car China. “Whether it is in terms of quality, installed technology and equipment, working environment and safety or environmental performance, our plant in Chengdu matches Volvo Cars’ global standards and requirements.”

Overall Volvo Cars sales development in China has been strong this year, with retail sales so far up 36 per cent compared to 2013. Volvo Cars is growing considerably faster than the premium segment in China, taking market share from its key competitors.

Apart from the XC60 and the S60L, other strong sellers in China are the segment-leading V60 and the V40 range. Volvo cars are currently sold at over 160 dealerships in China.

“Chinese customers do not have lower expectations than Europeans. They expect premium quality products,” said Mr Danielson. “Customers also have plenty of choice in the highly competitive market in China. That is why we make sure to deliver high-quality Volvo cars out of Chengdu which are at least as good as the cars we build in our European plants.”

Ondanks alles geef mij toch maar eentje uit Gent, kwestie van onze eigen economie te steunen.

Beste Casper, ik wil niet je topic vervuilen maar wat je schrijft geldt voor vele dingen die we kopen.

Heel veel komt al uit het verre buitenland en is helaas nogal eens van bedenkelijke kwaliteit. Bijna alles wat uit China komt en verkocht wordt in de speelgoedwinkels valt na 4 keer spelen uit elkaar.
Maar blijkbaar willen we zo goedkoop mogelijk iets bezitten en letten niet meer op kwaliteit. Je kunt beter een Rolex kopen in plaats van 50 keer een Casio: de totaalkosten zullen gelijk of lager zijn in geval van een Rolex.

De Zweedse autobouwer Volvo heeft een productielijn gestart voor de XC 60-terreinwagen. De bouw van de XC 60 valt op termijn weg in de Gentse Volvo-fabriek. Gent krijgt de productie van de kleinere V40 in de plaats.
De XC 60-terreinwagen wordt momenteel nog gebouwd in Gent en van daar naar China uitgevoerd. In de Chinese Volvo-fabrieken werd tot nog toe enkel een langere versie van de S60 geproduceerd. Dat model is exclusief bestemd voor de Chinese markt.

Daar komt de productie van de XC 60 nu bij. Werknemers uit de Gentse Volvo-fabriek trokken naar de Chinese vestiging in Chengdu om de opstart in goede banen te leiden. Uiteindelijk zullen in China steeds meer XC 60-modellen geproduceerd worden. De productie in Gent verdwijnt.

De Gentse fabriek heeft de garantie gekregen dat de productie van de kleinere V40 in de plaats komt. Op termijn wordt ook de productie van de kleine terreinwagen, de XC 40, in Gent verwacht.

En... hoe praktisch is het om in China geproduceerde auto's in Europa
te verkopen? Zal de levertermijn (die goed is bij Volvo) wel een pak

Correctie dus :

Verschillende media berichten vandaag dat de Volvo XC60 zou verdwijnen uit Gent.
“Klopt niet”, zegt de woordvoerder van de fabriek.

Wat is er precies aan de hand?

De XC60 is momenteel het populairste model van Volvo wereldwijd en ook in China. De compacte SUV werd tot nu toe alleen in Gent gebouwd, waar de productie eerder dit jaar zelfs werd verhoogd om te voldoen aan de grote vraag uit China.
Volvo heeft echter beslist om de XC60 nu ook in Chengdu te produceren. Zo is export vanuit België niet langer nodig en vermijdt Volvo de dure importtaksen in China. “In China wordt gestart met de productie van dat model voor de Chinese markt. Niet voor Europa, Amerika of de rest van de wereld”, zegt Mark De Mey van Volvo Cars Gent.
De Belgische fabriek verliest dus de volumes voor de Chinese markt (17 procent van het totaal) en dat is uiteraard geen goed nieuws.
Het is ook de vraag waar de volgende generatie van de XC60 geassembleerd wordt.
“Volvo is nu bezig met heel het gamma te vernieuwen. Er komen opvolgers voor de huidige S60, V60 en XC60 en ook de S80. Al die modellen moeten nog toegewezen worden, maar daarover is nog geen concrete beslissing genomen”, aldus De Mey.
Dat de XC60 helemaal zou verdwijnen uit Gent, is dus voorbarig.
Wel al zeker is dat de Gentse Volvo-fabriek de volgende generatie van de V40 mag bouwen, de populaire compacte middenklasser die er vandaag ook al van de band rolt.

Ik zal dit draadje overigens sluiten omdat anders de discussie op twee fronten gevoerd gaat worden. Dat is niet de bedoeling.
